When I was growing up, we would visit Queen Victoria Park to take in the glorious displays of tulips and daffodils.
Each visit included a history lesson from my mother as she recalled how Canada provided a safe haven for Dutch Princess Juliana and her family during the Second World War. Mom would tell us about the gift of tulips presented to the Canadian people as an expression of her nation’s gratitude. After hearing the story a few times, I began to tune her out.
