Bank of Canada Museum

Explore two creative takes on currency: from rarely seen rejected bank note designs to artist Ho Tam’s remix of money and myth. Plus, join in with hands-on crafts for all ages!

Money that Almost Was
When a new bank note is created, many designs are proposed—and many rejected. But none are failures. This display features nearly 30 bank note models, designs submitted to the Bank of Canada when new bank notes were being prepared. They were all rejected, but each gives us a glimpse into the creative process, the designers’ art and the exploration of a nation’s identity. On a digital display unit, visitors can learn about each design, examine it in detail, and browse further reading from a collection of related blogs. Accompanying crafts and activities include making your own bank note.

The Greatest Stories Ever Told: Prints by Ho Tam
Ho Tam is an artist who is inspired by the symbolic images on bank notes. For this exhibition of inkjet prints, Tam scanned individual images from dozens of international bank notes. He then remixed them into colourful digital collages, creating new meanings. Inspired by fables and fairytales, he has written a story for each collage. Together, Tam’s stories and prints encourage us to rethink the stories told on our own bank notes.
