Bert Nagel was saved from an orphanage in Baarn in 1944 when he was 7 years old. People in the village knew that the children were starving that winter (like most others in the country) and he was adopted. My dad went on to live the happiest of lives and died last year. He and my mother moved to Canada because they remember the day that their village was liberated by Canadians. It was the first time they tasted candy.
