Ottawa, Ontario, May 11, 2018: The Canadian Tulip Festival’s World of Tulips theme stems from last year’s October visit to Ottawa of “tulipists” participating in the World Tulip Summit. More than 30,000 Cream Yellow World Friendship Tulips planted then are blooming now across the capital region including a special commemorative bed at Commissioners Park planted by the National Capital Commission, Official Gardeners of Canada’s Capital. These cream-yellow Darwin Hybrids represent international friendship, and are the symbol of the 66th edition of the Canadian Tulip Festival which opened today. The Festival will continue for 10 days until May 21st.
Metaphorically the Festival is growing beyond its physical site locations of Commissioners Park-Dow’s Lake, Lansdowne Park, ByWard Market and the Garden Promenade where visitors can expect the sea of tulip beds, floral installations, the Hommage to Malak Photo Exhibit, workshops, garden and cycling tours, crafts market, music by Music and Beyond, dance events, Selfi spots, Mother’s Day Brunch, yoga in Majors Hill Park, Kids’ Fun Zone, and the ever popular fireworks display on May 20th at Dow’s Lake.
Through the World of Tulips theme, the Festival is connecting with and celebrating international relationships. The World Friendship Tulip Garden is a unique garden setting made up of 5-foot tulips hand-painted by artists representing over 100 countries. The Children’s World of Tulips Art Wall comprises close to 5,000 Children’s tulip artworks displayed over over 300 ft. of wall space in Aberdeen Pavilion at Lansdowne Park. The art was gathered from elementary school children from local schools and from around the world. Various countries – India, Turkey, China and the Netherlands among others, present cultural performances, artworks and programming supported by local embassies, cultural groups and festivals. The Air Canada World of Tulips Raffle offers a chance to win a trip for two to one of several international tulip festival destinations. Look for the Ottawa Premiere of “Tulipani: Love , Honour and a Bicycle ” a Canadian, Italian and Dutch film collaboration by an Academy Award nominated director being screened at Cineplex-Lansdowne Park this Monday evening.
Foodies will be pleasantly satisfied as well. A number of culinary events are scheduled, among them, visitors are invited to taste their way through one of the National Capital Region’s most intriguing culinary neighbourhoods. Expert guides will lead participants on epicurean excursions to meet the merchants, discover outstanding ethnic and fine food shops, and sample award-winning dishes- some of
them made with edible tulip petals. As well, Eat Drink Spring on the Farm and Rendez-vous des saveurs have partnered with the Canadian Tulip Festival to present delectable events on both festival weekends.
The Festival is particularly appreciative of the many local partnerships that have been established that reflect the theme of international friendship in a community setting. Beechwood Cemetery offers guided tours through its beautiful gardens; the Bank of Canada is showcasing a special tulip exhibit; Festival featured artist Monique Martin invites urbanites to experience tulips in the ByWard Market, and for those looking for more action, there is the Tulip Trail to take between Commissioners Park and Lansdowne as well as a 10K run “through the tulips”.

About the Canadian Tulip Festival
“A World of Tulips” – Since 1953, Canada’s most colourful festival celebrates the tulip, Ottawa’s official flower and an international symbol of friendship and peace, through art and culture. Paying tribute to veterans and the WWII liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian troops, our millions of tulips set the stage for a celebration of authentic art, cultural, historic, culinary, garden and family tulip experiences. Uniquely Canadian and one of the largest events of its kind in the world!
